This Week in Room 8 (2-29 to 3-4)

ELA:

  • We continue to read and discuss the characteristics of a good citizen and strong leaders. While we read, we are working on making connections to the text, comparing and contrasting different texts/people, and retelling both fiction and non-fiction text.
  • In our writing, we continue to work on stretching our ideas and making sure to include juicy details. We are building our vocabulary by trying to use a wide-range of words. Instead of writing the word "big," we are thinking about gigantic, huge, or humongous.
  • We understand that our sight words should be spelled correctly and that our juicy words are what we consider "brave" spelling.
  • We are applying our knowledge for adding endings to words like -ing, -ed, -er, -est. We know that if there is one consonant after the vowel, we need to double the consonant before the ending.
  • We have been working on understanding the prefixes -un (not) and -re (again).
MATH:
  • We continue to demonstrate our understanding for missing addends                                            ( __ + 6 = 18 and 12 - __ = 5)
  • We are applying our understanding of adding and subtracting multiples of 10 to a number. We know that when we add groups of 10, we go down our hundreds chart and the number gets larger. If we are subtracting groups of 10, we go up on our hundreds chart and the number gets smaller.
  • We are using our problem solving strategies to answer word problems and multi-step word problems. First, we need to determine what the word problem is asking. Are we adding or subtracting to solve the problem. Next, we need to show our thinking by creating a drawing/quick sketch. Then, we need to write our equation and include a label for our answer. Finally, we need to write out our steps in words.
  • We will be learning strategies to add within 100.
SCIENCE:
  • We will begin to explore the properties of light and perform a wide-range of experiments this week!
GOOGLE CLASSROOM:
  • Please help your child to check the Google Classroom app on his/her iPad each night. Our class will be using this in place of nightly emails regarding homework. There will be questions posted and videos for your child to watch to prepare for an upcoming lesson at least 2-3 times a week. We have been practicing how to post a response and upload a picture. I am looking forward to utilizing this tool for the remainder of the school year!
KHAN ACADEMY:
  • Your child has an account set up on Khan Academy. You can have your child work on the Early Math Skills or the 3rd Grade Math. If you have your child take the Mastery Task, it will find a "good fit" for where your child is at with the targeted math skill. There are videos that your child can watch if he/she gets stuck and hints that your child can click on to see the different strategies to solve. Any time that your child uses on Khan Academy will count towards math practice during the week.
FRIDAY- Just a reminder that Friday is an early dismissal at 11:40. Please make sure to send in a paper note with your child for any dismissal plans that are different. I appreciate the paper notes!

Thanks!
