This Week in Room 8 (2-1 through 2/5)

This week we will continue to learn about penguins. Last week we learned about the Emperor and Chinstrap penguins. This week we will be learning about the Adelie and Macaroni penguins. At the end of the week, we will be leaving Antarctica and making our way back to the U.S.A!

Science/ELA

  • We are learning how to dig for important information when we read.
  • We are practicing going back in the text to find answers to questions.
  • We are learning how these penguins are alike and different.
  • We continue to make observations on the Hermit Crabs.
Phonics/Grammar/Writing:
  • We are learning how to read and write the contractions n't and 'll.
  • We are practicing writing verb endings (-s, -ed, -ing).
  • We are practicing restating the question when we write out answers. You can practice this skill at home with daily conversations. When you ask a question, encourage your child to restate the question. For example, "Would you like some water?" Your child could say "Yes, I would like some water." instead of just saying "Yes!"
  • We continue to work on including adjectives in our sentence writing to create a vivid picture for the reader.
Math:
  • We continue to work on place value (identifying the digit and the value). For example, 59. The digit in the ten's place is 5. The value in the ten's place is 50.
  • We will be working on critical thinking and problem solving skills this week as we create and answer math problems for the Global Math Twitter Task Challenge (#gmttc1). Last time, we had a class in New Zealand answer our math problems. I wonder where the students will be from this time around!

Today's Pictures!

We started our day with a "Think Math" activity!
Each student created equations where they added three numbers to create an even sum.
I could feel our brains growing this morning as we problem
 solved for this activity!

You can check out our results (for those that finished) by clicking on the link below:

Today we learned about Emperor Penguins.
We read about these penguins and went digging for important details.
When we were done "digging," we practiced going back to the text to
find the evidence for our answers. We learned about where they live, their height, weight, and diet, and what they look like.
Did you know that emperor penguins can swim underwater with speeds up to 25 mph?

We played a place value game where we had to find a specific digit in a specific location.
For example, "Find the next number on the board that has a 9 in the ten's place."
We reviewed the locations for the one's, ten's, and hundred's place.

This game was a huge hit!

Finally, we wrapped up our day with a fun exit slip.

The students wrote down on a post-it note what "stuck" with them today.
Thanks, Alex21, for taking the picture for me!

Antarctica... Here We Come!

Mrs. Sutic came to our room today to help us through customs.
We created our own passports for the trip out of the country!

Mr. McConnell was our pilot for our flight to Antarctica.
Our 19 hour flight was over in a flash!

We are looking forward to a great week in Antarctica
learning about different kinds of penguins, cardinal directions,
and continents/oceans!

This Week in Room 8 (1-25 to 1-29)

We are off to Antarctica!

This week we are going to take a virtual trip to Antarctica! We are going to learn about different kinds of penguins and what they need to survive the harsh climate.

ELA:

  • We will be reading about different kinds of penguins.
  • We will practice comparing and contrasting.
  • We will continue to practice determining the main idea and how to make inferences with text.
  • We will be practicing going back in the text to prove our answers. We call this "finding the evidence."
  • We will be practicing finding key details with non-fiction text.
MATH:
  • We will be reviewing adding and subtracting with missing addends. ( __ + 3 = 11)
  • We will be reviewing how to add three numbers together.
  • We will continue to practice greater than, less than, and equal.
  • We will continue to practice determining the digit and the value of the digit in the hundred's, ten's, and one's place.
SCIENCE:
  • We will learn more about the characteristics of different kinds of penguins. How do these characteristics help them to survive?
  • We will continue to learn about how animals use their senses to survive.
GEOGRAPHY:
  • We will be learning about the compass rose/cardinal directions, naming the different continents, and naming different oceans.

This Week in Pictures!

We jump started our brains by writing as many words as possible that have 3 syllables.
Can you think of any 3 syllable words?

Our class worked hard using Padlet.
to create a list of short vowel words.
You can check out our results by clicking on the link below:

We took our hermit crabs out of their container and observed.
We were amazed to see how they move across the kidney table.
We made observations on how they use their senses to survive.

After we finished observing, we wrote about our experience in our journals.

Next week, we are off to Antarctica!

This Week in Room 8 (1-18 to 1- 22)

Just a reminder:
There is no school on Monday.

ELA:

  • This week we will learn about cause and effect. As readers, understanding this skill can help us make predictions while reading.
  • We will continue to practice identifying different non-fiction text features.
  • For non-fiction text, we will work on determining important information and identifying the central message of the text.

MATH:

  • We will continue to practice place value. 549 What is the digit in the ten's place? The answer is 4. What is the value of the digit in the ten's place? The answer is 40.
  • We are also working on writing the number in expanded form.                                                549 would be 500 + 40 + 9 = 549.
  • We are also working on identifying how many ten's and one's are in a given number. The number 49 would be 4 tens, 9 ones.
  • If your child has not yet completed the Tenmarks assignment, please have your child complete it.
  • On IXL, there are activities that your child can work on. These activities are starred.
SCIENCE:
  • We will be learning how animals and some plants use their senses to detect light, sound, smell, touch, and taste.
  • We will continue to make observations on our hermit crabs. We had a few students name one of the hermit crabs "Connor" because he likes to hang out and burrow in the corner. :)

Kindness Connection- Kipling Style!

Kipling Cares!

Our class was so excited to get started on the project!

We buddied up with 3rd graders for the Kindness Connection!

We made cards to go along with the Cheer Bag.

We stuffed our animals.
"Teamwork makes the dream work!"

We decorated the outside of the bags with
stencil drawings, creative drawings, jokes, and words to bring cheer.

Finally, we placed our Cheer Bag in the boxes for the special delivery!

My heart was overflowing today with all that took place in the gym today.
It was so great to see boys and girls of all ages working together to bring
cheer to someone that they have not met yet.
We were thinking beyond ourselves, beyond Kipling,
and I know that this will be an experience we all will remember!

This Week (so far) in pictures!

Our class was up for a place value math challenge!
Students listened to the prompt, wrote the number in standard form and expanded form,
and used the "Number Pieces" app to create the number in model form.

One of our prompts was to create a 3 digit number with a 7 in the ten's place.
Another example was to create a 3 digit number where the digits add to 10.
We could feel our minds growing and stretching!

We did buddy research on Pebble Go where students found facts
about either hermit crabs or crabs.
Afterwards, we shared our information with our tablemates.
We saw how hermit crabs and crabs are alike and different.

We counted our change for the Kindness Challenge.
Our class has raised $80.86!!!
