Practicing our Number Knowledge: What comes before/after?

We began our week with our first Kahoot in 1st Grade.
Students worked to answer questions about what comes before or after the
given number in the question.
WE LOVE KAHOOT!

In one of our Math Rotations, the students picked a number. Then,
they had to figure out what would come before or after the number.
We are also working on writing our numbers without flips.

Another Math Rotation had the students working to figure out the number
that would go on the empty apple. We are gaining
confidence with our numbers to 120.

What can you do at home to help your child with this skill?
  • Pick any number between 1-120. Have your child tell you the number that comes after it. Once your child gains confidence with this skill, have your child tell you the number that comes before it.
  • Cross the Century: Say a number that has a 9 in the One's Place (9, 19, 29...). Have your child tell you the number that comes next (10, 20, 30...). A challenge to this activity is to say a number that has a 0 in the One's Place (10, 20, 30...) and have your child tell you what comes before.
  • Have your child practice counting backwards from 20-0, 50-0, then 100-0. Counting backwards requires a good understanding of the patterns on the hundred's chart.
